Bible Verses about Homosexuality

by CAPP-USA

While not many, the bible verses that address homosexual behavior are clear and unanimous in their condemnation of it.

Old Testament

      1. “God created man in his own image… male and female created he them. And God blessed them, saying: Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it.” (Genesis 1:27-28)

With this, Homosexual behavior is identified as a sin against human nature.

  1. ‘The men of Sodom are rebuked (Genesis 19:1-11) when, seeking to abuse two angels of God, they called out: ‘Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.’ Lot went outside to meet them…and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing.” (Genesis 19:24-25).
  2. “Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.” (Leviticus 18:22)
  3. “If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” (Leviticus 20:13)

These bible verses about homosexuality clearly condemn it.

The Bible condemns homosexuality in all its forms.

New Testament

      1. “Jesus told them…’But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother [and be joined to his wife], and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” (Mark 10:5-9)

Here, again, sexual behavior outside this norm is a sin against human nature.

  1. “Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” 1 Cor 6:9-10
  2. St. Paul explained how, having “exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made” (Genesis 1-22) “God gave them over to shameful passions: their wives replaced natural intercourse with unnatural ones, and so also men…became enflamed with lust for one another, and men committed shameful acts with men and received the deserved reward of their deviation.” (Romans 1:26-27).
  3. “[T]he law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for…the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality…and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God”. 1 Timothy 1:8-11
  4. “Likewise, Sodom, Gomorrah, and the surrounding towns, which, in the same manner as they, indulged in sexual promiscuity and practiced unnatural vice, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.” (Jude 1:7)

Three circles containing symbols of the three principles of catholic social teaching: human dignity, subsidiarity, and solidarity.

Three Key Principles

Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles - Human Dignity, Solidarity and Subsidiarity. Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. Good governments and good economic systems find ways of fostering the three principles.

Human Dignity

This means a correct understanding of the human person and of each person’s unique value. All Catholic social teaching flows from this: the inherent dignity of every person that comes from being made in God’s image.

Solidarity

Solidarity is not “a feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of others. It is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good”. (Pope St. John Paul II, 38) Love of God and love of neighbor are, in fact, linked and form one, single commandment.

Subsidiarity

Subsidiarity “is a fundamental principle of social philosophy, fixed and unchangeable, that one should not withdraw from individuals and commit to the community what they can accomplish by their own enterprise and industry. So, too, it is an injustice and at the same time a grave evil and a disturbance of right order to transfer to the larger and higher collectivity functions which can be performed and provided for by the lesser and subordinate bodies”. (Pope Pius XI)
