It promises protection. It promises that the wrong will finally be answered, the enemy finally silenced, the grievance finally satisfied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">But <strong>violence cannot deliver peace. Violence begets violence.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">A nation does not lose its peace all at once.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">It happens gradually. A headline breaks, and then another. A school, a house of worship, a public gathering, a quiet neighborhood street, a family home \u2014 places meant for learning, prayer, civic life, friendship, and rest \u2014 suddenly become places of fear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">At first, we are shocked. Then we are angry. Then we are exhausted. And then, almost without noticing it, we begin to expect the next tragedy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">That expectation is itself a warning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The cycle of violence does not begin only when a weapon is raised or a life is taken. It begins earlier, in the imagination, when another person is no longer seen as a brother, a sister, a neighbor, or a child of God. It begins when society forgets what the human person is. It begins when anger becomes identity, resentment becomes politics, and alienation becomes normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Pope Benedict XVI described our age with painful accuracy when he warned of violence reaching a \u201cdegree\u2026that knows no bounds\u201d. That phrase does not feel distant. It feels like a description of the evening news. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/benedict-xvi\/en\/speeches\/2011\/october\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20111027_assisi.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Day of Reflection, Dialogue, and Prayer, October 2011)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">So we must ask a deeper question than the one our politics usually asks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Not merely: How do we manage violence?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">But: <strong>What kind of society forms people capable of violence \u2014 and what kind of society forms peacemakers?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">Violence Is a False Gospel<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Violence always comes wrapped in a promise.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">It promises justice. It promises protection. It promises that the wrong will finally be answered, the enemy finally silenced, the grievance finally satisfied. It tells the angry man that his rage is righteous. It tells the fearful woman that force will make her safe. It tells a wounded society that peace can be created by domination.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The Church says otherwise. Violence begets violence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Pope St. John Paul II said it plainly: \u201cpeace cannot be established by violence\u201d. <a class=\"alternate-link\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/homilies\/1979\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_hom_19790929_irlanda-dublino-drogheda.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Apostolic Journey to Ireland)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Pope Benedict XVI went to the root of the matter: <strong>\u201cviolence is incompatible with the nature of God\u201d<\/strong>. <a class=\"alternate-link\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/benedict-xvi\/en\/speeches\/2006\/september\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20060912_university-regensburg.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Apostolic Journey to Munchen, Altotting and Regensburg, September 2006)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Pope Leo XIV has warned against seeking justice through &#8220;violent means&#8221;. <a class=\"alternate-link\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/messages\/pont-messages\/2025\/documents\/20250804-messaggio-settimana-sociale-peru.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(To Participants in the Social Week in Peru)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Pope Francis, speaking to victims who had suffered unspeakable brutality, reduced the matter to its moral essence: \u201cNo to violence!&#8221; <a class=\"alternate-link\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/speeches\/2023\/february\/documents\/20230201-vittimeest-repdem-congo.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Apostolic Journey to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, February 2023)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">This is not pious softness. It is Christian realism.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Violence does not heal the wound it claims to avenge. It deepens it. It does not restore human dignity. It tramples it. It does not strengthen <a class=\"alternate-link\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/the-common-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the common good<\/a>. It tears the social fabric and leaves the next generation to inherit fear.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">This is why violence is not only a political problem. It is a spiritual lie. It says that the human person can be reduced to an obstacle. It says the enemy\u2019s life has no claim on us. It says we may do evil so that good may come.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">And once a culture accepts that lie, the cycle begins to turn. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>However<\/strong>, <strong>the Church\u2019s rejection of violence does not mean the innocent may never be defended<\/strong> or that public authority may never restrain an aggressor. The Church recognizes that legitimate defense can be not only a right but, for those responsible for the lives of others, a grave duty. <a class=\"alternate-link\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG0015\/__P7Z.HTM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(CCC, 2263 &#8211; 2265)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">But force used to defend life is morally different from violence driven by vengeance, hatred, domination, or delight in another\u2019s suffering. Even when force is necessary, it must remain proportionate and directed toward protection, justice, and the restoration of peace. The dignity of an aggressor does not disappear because he has committed evil.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #eb7425;\">What kind of society forms people capable of violence \u2014 and what kind of society forms peacemakers?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">When God Is Denied, Man Is Diminished<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Catholic Social Teaching begins where modern politics often refuses to begin: with the truth about the human person.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The human person is not merely a voter, consumer, taxpayer, laborer, patient, migrant, offender, rival, or member of a tribe. The human person is made in the image of God.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">That is why every social question is finally a moral question. That is why law, economics, politics, technology, family life, and culture must all be judged by whether they serve the dignity of the person and the common good.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">When that truth is forgotten, violence becomes easier to justify.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Pope Benedict XVI saw this clearly. He warned that <strong>\u201cthe denial of God\u201d leads man to take himself as the measure of all things<\/strong>. If there is no judge above the self, then desire becomes law. If there is no Creator, then the creature becomes disposable. If there is no Father, then the other person is no longer a brother. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/benedict-xvi\/en\/speeches\/2011\/october\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20111027_assisi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(<\/a><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/benedict-xvi\/en\/speeches\/2011\/october\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20111027_assisi.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Day of Reflection, Dialogue, and Prayer, October 2011)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">This does not mean that every unbeliever embraces violence, any more than every professed believer lives peacefully. Many who do not profess faith act courageously in defense of life and justice, while many who invoke the name of God betray Him through hatred.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">This is why <strong>the collapse of peace is connected to the collapse of truth.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The deeper danger is that when society abandons any truth about the human person beyond individual will or political power, human dignity loses its secure foundation. Rights begin to appear as something granted by governments, majorities, or courts rather than something belonging to every person by nature.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">A society can have courts, police, schools, elections, markets, and media, and still be spiritually disordered. It can be connected by technology and yet profoundly alone. It can speak constantly about rights and still forget the source of rights. It can denounce hatred while teaching people to despise their enemies.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Pope St. John Paul II described modern society as marked by \u201cfragmentation and alienation\u201d. That alienation is not abstract. It is visible in broken families, lonely young people, polarized communities, neglected neighborhoods, contemptuous politics, and public discourse that trains us to see opponents before persons. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/speeches\/1985\/may\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_spe_19850513_corte-internazionale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Apostolic Journey to the Netherlands, 7)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Violence grows in that soil.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">It grows when the family is weakened. It grows when faith is excluded from public life. It grows when the poor are ignored. It grows when children are taught that freedom means self-creation without responsibility. It grows when human life is treated as negotiable \u2014 in the womb, on the street, at the border, in the prison, in the hospital, or in the enemy\u2019s neighborhood.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The crisis is not simply that people break laws.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The crisis is that people no longer know who they are.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">Violence Begins in the Heart<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Every act of violence has a social context, but it also has a spiritual history.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><strong>Before violence enters the street, it enters the heart.<\/strong> Before it becomes action, it becomes permission. Before it becomes bloodshed, it becomes contempt.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Pope Francis has warned that \u201chatred, indifference and selfishness\u201d <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/20241024-enciclica-dilexit-nos.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Dilexit Nos, 59)<\/a> can reign within us. The extremist. The criminal. The unstable person. The ideological opponent. The other side.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">But the Gospel does not permit us to examine only other people\u2019s hearts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Christ tells us that murder begins before the killing. It begins in anger, contempt, and the refusal to see the other as brother. The cycle of violence is sustained not only by those who commit violent acts, but by a culture that feeds hatred, profits from division, excuses cruelty, and teaches us to enjoy the humiliation of our enemies.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Pope St. Paul VI called violence a \u201cblind energy\u201d that degrades the person.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">It degrades the victim, whose dignity is assaulted. It degrades the perpetrator, whose conscience is wounded. It degrades the community, which learns to live under suspicion. And it degrades the culture, which slowly becomes accustomed to what should horrify it. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/paul-vi\/en\/messages\/peace\/documents\/hf_p-vi_mes_19771208_xi-world-day-for-peace.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Day of Peace, 1978)<\/a><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">This is how violence becomes normal.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Not because everyone commits it, but because too many begin to excuse it when it serves their preferred cause.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">Violence Begets Violence<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The reason violence cannot bring peace is that violence does not know how to stop.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">It demands an answer. It awakens revenge. It leaves behind grief, humiliation, fear, and rage. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">One act becomes a memory. The memory becomes a grievance. The grievance becomes an inheritance. Soon the next generation is fighting battles it did not begin but has been taught to continue.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Our Lord warned us: <strong>\u201cAll who take the sword will perish by the sword.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The Church has repeated that warning in every age. Pope St. Paul VI warned that violence eventually turns back upon itself, that it \u201cconcludes its cycle against itself\u201d.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/paul-vi\/en\/messages\/peace\/documents\/hf_p-vi_mes_19771208_xi-world-day-for-peace.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Day of Peace, 1978)<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">This is the cycle we are living through.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">And it is not only a matter of isolated crimes. Catholic Social Teaching gives us a stronger moral vocabulary. It calls us to recognize \u201cstructures of sin\u201d: patterns of personal sin that harden into social habits, institutions, assumptions, and systems. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Pope St. John Paul II taught that these structures are the \u201cfruit of many sins\u201d. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/sollicitudo-rei-socialis\/#37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Sollicitudo rei Socialis, 37)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Structures do not sin independently of persons. But they can embody, reward, normalize, and perpetuate sinful choices. They can make violence easier to commit, easier to justify, and more difficult to escape.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><strong>A culture of violence is not created in a single moment.<\/strong> It is built gradually through contempt for human life, racial and ideological hatred, abortion, exploitation, indifference to the poor, pornography and addiction, the weakening of families and communities, the isolation of vulnerable people, and a public culture that increasingly treats God and objective moral truth as irrelevant.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">These are not identical problems, and they do not contribute to violence in precisely the same way. But each can help create a society in which people are seen as disposable, threatening, burdensome, or valuable only insofar as they serve another person\u2019s purposes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The cycle is social because sin is never merely private.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">But the answer is also social because grace is never merely private.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">Politics Matters, But Politics Cannot Save Us<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><br \/>Because violence wounds the common good, public authority has real responsibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">A society must protect the innocent. It must enforce just laws. It must restrain those who do harm. It must care for victims. It must address mental illness, family breakdown, poverty, addiction, and the cultural conditions that feed despair. It must form young people in virtue. It must recover reverence for life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><strong>Catholic Social Teaching is not a retreat from public responsibility.<\/strong> It does not say, \u201cPray, and ignore policy.\u201d It does not spiritualize away the duties of government, communities, schools, churches, and families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">But neither does it accept the illusion that politics alone can heal what is broken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">No party platform can convert the human heart. No law can manufacture mercy. No police force can create solidarity. No election can substitute for repentance. No ideology can give what only God gives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Politics can restrain evil. Law can protect life. Public policy can strengthen or weaken families and communities. Institutions can cultivate justice or deepen alienation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">These things matter greatly.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">But politics cannot redeem us.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">This is why the Church speaks of peace as more than order and more than the absence of conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Peace is the tranquility of a rightly ordered society\u2014an order rooted in truth, justice, charity, freedom, and respect for human dignity. It is also a \u201cgift of God.\u201d <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/benedict-xvi\/en\/messages\/peace\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_mes_20101208_xliv-world-day-peace.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Pope Benedict XVI)<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">That does not make peace passive. It makes peace demanding. A gift must be received, guarded, cultivated, and shared. It must shape institutions and consciences. It must enter the home, the parish, the school, the workplace, the courtroom, the legislature, and the public square.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Peace requires law, but it also requires conversion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Peace requires justice, but it also requires forgiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Peace requires courage, but it also requires humility.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #eb7425;\">Violence begets violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">Justice Without Forgiveness Becomes Revenge<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">One of the most dangerous misunderstandings of Christian peace is the idea that forgiveness means weakness.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">It does not.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><strong>Forgiveness does not deny evil.<\/strong> It does not excuse injustice. It does not erase accountability. It does not ask victims to pretend they have not suffered or require that dangerous people be placed in a position to harm again.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Christian forgiveness is never built upon denial. It begins with truth: naming the evil committed, protecting those still at risk, demanding accountability, and seeking restitution where possible.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">But forgiveness refuses to let evil determine the future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Pope St. John Paul II gave the Church one of the clearest formulas for this moment: \u201c<strong>No peace without justice, no justice without forgiveness\u201d.<\/strong> <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/messages\/peace\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_mes_20011211_xxxv-world-day-for-peace.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(World Day of Peace, 2002)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">That is not a slogan. It is a Christian architecture for social healing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Justice without forgiveness can become revenge. Forgiveness without justice can become evasion. The Church rejects both. She insists on truth, accountability, protection of the innocent, and restoration of right order. But she also insists that hatred cannot be the foundation of peace.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">This is why the Christian response to violence is harder than the partisan response. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The partisan response asks: Who is to blame?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The Christian response asks: What is true? What is just? Who has been wounded? What must be restored? What must be forgiven? <strong>What must change in me?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Only that kind of moral seriousness can break the cycle.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">Solidarity Is the Antidote to Alienation<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><br \/>If alienation feeds violence, solidarity is part of the cure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">But solidarity is often misunderstood as vague kindness or emotional concern. Pope St. John Paul II gave the Church a more demanding definition. Solidarity is a \u201cfirm and persevering determination\u201d to seek the common good. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/sollicitudo-rei-socialis\/#38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Sollicitudo rei Socialis, 38)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">That means solidarity is not sentiment. It is a moral commitment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">It means refusing to reduce people to categories. It means seeing the victim and the offender as persons, even while insisting on justice. It means defending the unborn child, the elderly person, the immigrant, the poor, the prisoner, the police officer, the grieving parent, the lonely young man, and the neighbor with whom we disagree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">It means rebuilding the bonds that violence tries to destroy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">And those bonds are rebuilt locally first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Catholic Social Teaching\u2019s principle of subsidiarity reminds us that social renewal begins close to the person: in families, parishes, schools, neighborhoods, voluntary associations, local communities, and the daily duties of love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><strong>A government program cannot replace a father or mother<\/strong>. A court cannot replace a conscience. A bureaucracy cannot replace a parish. A screen cannot replace a family table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><strong>But subsidiarity does not mean that higher authorities may abandon struggling families or communities<\/strong>. Government and larger institutions have a duty to support, protect, and, when necessary, assist them\u2014without unnecessarily absorbing their responsibilities or weakening the human relationships upon which a healthy society depends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The culture of peace begins where human beings are first taught how to love.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #eb7425;\">Only Christ conquers evil not by domination, but by the Cross.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">Only Christ Breaks the Cycle of Violence<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><br \/>The deepest answer to violence is not an idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">It is a Person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Only Christ reveals the full dignity of the human person because only Christ \u201cfully reveals man to man himself.\u201d <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/hist_councils\/ii_vatican_council\/documents\/vat-ii_const_19651207_gaudium-et-spes_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Gaudium et Spes, 22)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Only Christ exposes the lie that another person must be destroyed for me to be free. Only Christ absorbs violence without returning it. <strong>Only Christ conquers evil not by domination, but by the Cross.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Pope Francis, citing St. John Paul II, reminds us that over the \u201cruins accumulated by hatred and violence\u2026the Kingdom of the Heart of Christ can be built.\u201d <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/20241024-enciclica-dilexit-nos.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Dilexit Nos, 182)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">That is the center of the Christian answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The world says peace comes when my enemy is defeated. Christ says peace comes when sin is conquered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The world says blood must be answered with blood. The Gospel proclaims that Christ has made peace through the blood of His Cross &#8211; \u201cthe blood of Christ\u201d creates peace. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/cotidie\/2017\/documents\/papa-francesco-cotidie_20170216_the-war-is-over.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The world says the other must die so that I may live. Christ, the Good Shepherd, lays down His life so that we \u201cmay have life, and have it abundantly.\u201d (John 10:10)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">That is why <strong>the Cross is the only true answer to violence.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">It reveals both the horror of sin and the greater power of mercy. It does not excuse evil. It defeats it. It does not abolish justice. It fulfills it. It does not deny suffering. It enters suffering and transforms it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The cycle of violence is broken only when human beings are converted from the logic of force to the logic of the Cross.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">The Work Before Us<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><br \/><strong>Christians are not helpless before violence.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The work begins by refusing hatred in our own hearts and by refusing to speak of political opponents, strangers, migrants, prisoners, the poor, the<br \/>unborn, or anyone else as a problem to be eliminated rather than a person to be loved.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">It continues when families form children in prayer, self-command, courage, mercy, and reverence for life; when parishes become schools of solidarity; when communities notice the lonely before isolation turns to despair; when laws protect the innocent and serve the common good; and when citizens refuse media, entertainment, and politics that train us to enjoy cruelty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">We must recover the Christian practice of peace\u2014each of us must \u201cbecome a peacemaker\u201d. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/en\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2016\/09\/29\/160929a.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Pope Francis)<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">A peacemaker is not passive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">A peacemaker tells the truth without hatred, seeks justice without revenge, protects the innocent without denying the dignity of the guilty, and refuses despair because Christ is risen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">And a peacemaker prays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><strong>Not because prayer is a substitute for action, but because prayer is the beginning of rightly ordered action.<\/strong> Prayer exposes the hatred hidden within us. It reminds us that we are creatures rather than gods.
