Pope Leo XIV\u2019s first encyclical is brand new \u2014 and it will require much prayer and discernment in the days ahead. But before anything else, it asks us three questions. On May 15, 2026 \u2014 the 135th anniversary of Rerum Novarum<\/a>, Pope Leo XIII\u2019s great encyclical on labor and capital \u2014 Pope Leo XIV released Magnifica Humanitas<\/a>, his first encyclical and an ambitious entry into one of the defining questions of our age: what does the rapid rise of artificial intelligence mean for human dignity<\/a>, work<\/a>, solidarity<\/a>, and the future of society?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nThe document is long, rich, and demanding. It will reward slow reading and serious study. The Catholic social tradition it draws upon stretches back 135 years and across dozens of pontificates. It will take time to absorb what Pope Leo XIV has placed before us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nBut here is what is initially striking about the encyclical: it does not begin with answers. It begins with questions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nIn paragraph 6, after a diagnosis of the technological moment we inhabit, the Pope pauses and turns to address the conscience of every reader directly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nHe writes that \u201ccrucial questions impose themselves on our conscience and can no longer be avoided.\u201d (Pope Leo XIV, 6)<\/a> And then he poses three:<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cWhere are we going?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cToward what goal do we wish to orient ourselves?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cWhat direction should we choose as a people and as a human community?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nNotice what Pope Leo XIV is doing. He is not beginning with condemnation. He is not leading with a policy proposal or a regulatory framework. He is beginning\u2014as a pastor\u2014with the questions we cannot responsibly avoid.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nThese questions were so important as an organizing theme in the encyclical that he reiterated them in his address to CAPP<\/a> during a private audience only 5 days after the encyclical’s release.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nSo let us examine how the encyclical answers each one.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nQUESTION #1 OF MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\u201cWhere Are We Going?\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
This is the diagnostic question \u2014 and the encyclical\u2019s answer is sobering.<\/span><\/p>\nIf we continue on our current trajectory without deliberate moral intervention, the document suggests we are drifting toward what the Pope calls the \u201cBabel syndrome\u201d: a world shaped by the idolatry of profit, the flattening of human difference into data, and the illusion that a single digital language can capture everything \u2014 including the mystery of the human person.<\/span><\/p>\nThe warning is sharpened in (Magnifica Humanitas, 5)<\/a>, where he identifies a structural problem few other voices have named so plainly: the main drivers of technological development are private entities whose resources and capacity to act now surpass those of many governments.<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cTechnological power takes on an unprecedented, predominantly \u2018private\u2019 aspect, which makes it even more challenging to discern, govern and direct such power toward the common good.\u201d (Pope Leo XIV, 5)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\nThis is not an abstract concern. When power escapes democratic accountability \u2014 when there is no mechanism for the common good<\/a>\u00a0to assert itself over the logic of profit \u2014 the vulnerable lose. They always do.<\/span><\/p>\nRerum Novarum<\/em> said the same thing about unregulated industrial capitalism in 1891. Magnifica Humanitas<\/em> says it about unregulated AI and digital power in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cMore power does not necessarily imply something better\u2026 if technological development advances without a corresponding ethical and social progress, the result may be an increase in means without a growth in humanity: \u2018having more\u2019 without \u2018being more.\u2019\u201d (Pope Leo XIV, 94)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\nThe encyclical also identifies a deeper ideological drift: a growing tendency\u2014which it names directly as a pathology<\/strong>\u2014to evaluate human beings by their productivity<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\nIn (Magnifica Humanitas, 51)<\/a>, the Pope warns against \u201cthe ideology that suggests that every person must earn or justify his or her own worth, to the point of attributing greater value to those who are more efficient or effective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\nThis is the culture we are headed for\u2014if we do not choose differently. And at the furthest horizon of this drift, the document places transhumanism and posthumanism\u2014philosophies that treat human limits not as part of our dignity but as engineering problems to be solved<\/strong>. The Pope does not dismiss these currents; he takes them seriously enough to name them as the ideological destination of an uncorrected course. (Magnifica Humanitas, 115, 116, 252)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\nIn short: where are we going?<\/strong> Toward a world where the mystery of the person is reduced to data, where power concentrates in private hands beyond democratic reach, and where human beings are measured by what they produce \u2014 unless we make a different choice.
<\/span><\/p>\nQUESTION #2 OF MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\u201cToward What Goal Do We Wish to Orient Ourselves?\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
This is the teleological question \u2014 the question of ends \u2014 and here the encyclical stands squarely within the tradition of Catholic Social Teaching that Pope St. John Paul II created CAPP to promote.<\/span><\/p>\nThe goal is not complicated, but it is demanding. It is integral human development: the authentic flourishing of every person in every aspect of life \u2014 spiritual, material, cultural, moral, relational \u2014 with no one left behind, and no part of the person reduced to a means.<\/span><\/p>\nPope Leo XIV is direct about this in (Magnifica Humanitas, 14)<\/a>. The standards of discernment are the principles Catholics have been given: \u201cthe dignity of the human person<\/a>, the universal destination of goods<\/a>, the preferential option for the poor<\/a>, care for our common home<\/a>, and peace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\nThese are not new. They are the accumulated wisdom of 135 years of the Church\u2019s engagement with the modern world. But they must now be applied \u2014 concretely \u2014 to AI governance, data systems, platforms, and algorithms.<\/span><\/p>\nAnd this living tradition continues: St. John Paul II\u2019s Laborem Exercens<\/a>\u00a0(1981) affirmed the priority of labor over capital and work as participation in God\u2019s creation, while Pope Francis in Fratelli Tutti<\/a> (2020) warns against economies that exclude the vulnerable, including gig workers on the periphery.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u201cDevelopment is truly human when it places people at the center instead of the accumulation of wealth.\u201d (Magnifica Humanitas, 83)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The encyclical deepens the goal as it moves forward.<\/span><\/p>\nIntegral human development is not merely a political or economic goal \u2014 it has a theological horizon.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nPope Leo XIV invokes the image of the New Jerusalem, the \u201ccivilization of love\u201d that both Pope St. John XXIII and Pope St. John Paul II held out as the ultimate direction of Christian social action.<\/span><\/p>\nThe goal we orient ourselves toward is, in the end, not a technocratic utopia but a human community in which every person is received as a gift, not evaluated as a resource.<\/span><\/p>\nThis is why the encyclical treats human dignity<\/a> not as one value among others to be weighed in a cost-benefit analysis, but as the starting point and criterion of all legitimate development.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nAny technology \u2014 any system, platform, or algorithm \u2014 that diminishes human dignity is not progress. It is regression, regardless of what the efficiency metrics say.<\/span><\/p>\nQUESTION #3 OF MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\u201cWhat Direction Should We Choose as a People and as a Human Community?\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
This is the practical question, and it is answered with one of the encyclical\u2019s most memorable images.<\/span><\/p>\nPope Leo XIV reaches back to the Book of Nehemiah. After the exile, Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to find the walls in ruins and the community in despair. He did not rebuild the city alone. He assigned \u201ceach person their own section of the wall\u201d and called the whole people to the work together.<\/span><\/p>\nThe encyclical holds this image up as the model for what the Church \u2014 and indeed all people of good will \u2014 are called to do in the face of the AI revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u201cAll are given their own section of the wall: scientists and researchers, entrepreneurs and workers, educators and legislators, civil society, popular movements and faith communities\u2026 We should not be intimidated by tensions or differences because they can become creative forces when guided by shared responsibility.\u201d (Magnifica Humanitas, 13)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The direction, in other words, is not withdrawal, resignation, or the passive hope that technology will regulate itself. Nor is it the opposite error: a panicked rejection of AI as inherently dehumanizing.<\/span><\/p>\nThe direction is engaged, collaborative, morally grounded stewardship.<\/span><\/p>\nThe encyclical is concrete about what this looks like. In paragraph 14, Pope Leo XIV calls for \u201cresponsible planning, the assessment of human and social impact, the inclusion of the most vulnerable, the promotion of digital literacy and guiding research and industry toward justice and peace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\nThese are not vague aspirations. They are practical criteria \u2014 derived from CST \u2014 that can and must be applied to technology governance. But the encyclical also insists the choice is ultimately a choice between two cultures, two ways of being human together.<\/span><\/p>\nIn Magnifica Humanitas, 16<\/a>, Pope Leo XIV puts it in its most compressed form:<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cThe task that stands before us is that of being builders of communion, rather than architects of Babel. We are to be servants of the coming Kingdom, instead of lords of towers destined for ruin.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nBuilders of communion. That is the direction.<\/span><\/p>\nNot the domination of nature, of other people, or of the future by those with the most processing power \u2014 but the patient, humble, collaborative work of building a world in which every person finds a place.<\/span><\/p>\nMuch Remains to Be Discerned<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
Magnifica Humanitas is new. It is a text that will reward re-reading. There are chapters on the history of Catholic Social Teaching, on the specific pathologies of digital culture, on the ethics of AI governance, and on the theological vision of integral ecology and the common home that have not been touched here.<\/span><\/p>\nBut beginning with the three questions\u2014and tracing how the encyclical answers them\u2014gives us something solid to stand on as the wider conversation begins.<\/span><\/p>\nPope Leo XIV has asked good questions. He has also answered them \u2014 not in a tidy list but woven through the whole of a rich and serious document.<\/span><\/p>\nThe encyclical is structured so that the answers deepen as you read, which is itself a statement about how discernment works.<\/span><\/p>\nThe next step is ours.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nTHE THREE QUESTIONS OF MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS \u2014 SUMMARY<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n- Where are we going? <\/strong><\/span>Toward a Babel of private technological power, efficiency-as-ideology, and the reduction of the person to data \u2014 unless we intervene.<\/span><\/li>\n
- Toward what goal? <\/strong>Integral human development: the flourishing of every person in every dimension, with no one left behind \u2014 a goal with a theological horizon in a civilization of love.<\/span><\/li>\n
- What direction should we choose? <\/span><\/strong>The direction of Nehemiah: each person taking their section of the wall, guided by the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, building communion rather than Babel.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. This means a correct understanding of the human person and of each person\u2019s unique value. All Catholic social teaching flows from this: the inherent dignity of every person that comes from being made in God\u2019s image.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Solidarity is not \u201ca feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of others. It is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good\u201d. Subsidiarity \u201cis a fundamental principle of social philosophy, fixed and unchangeable, that one should not withdraw from individuals and commit to the community what they can accomplish by their own enterprise and industry. So, too, it is an injustice and at the same time a grave evil and a disturbance of right order to transfer to the larger and higher collectivity functions which can be performed and provided for by the lesser and subordinate bodies\u201d. On May 15, 2026 \u2014 the 135th anniversary of Rerum Novarum<\/a>, Pope Leo XIII\u2019s great encyclical on labor and capital \u2014 Pope Leo XIV released Magnifica Humanitas<\/a>, his first encyclical and an ambitious entry into one of the defining questions of our age: what does the rapid rise of artificial intelligence mean for human dignity<\/a>, work<\/a>, solidarity<\/a>, and the future of society?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The document is long, rich, and demanding. It will reward slow reading and serious study. The Catholic social tradition it draws upon stretches back 135 years and across dozens of pontificates. It will take time to absorb what Pope Leo XIV has placed before us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n But here is what is initially striking about the encyclical: it does not begin with answers. It begins with questions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n In paragraph 6, after a diagnosis of the technological moment we inhabit, the Pope pauses and turns to address the conscience of every reader directly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n He writes that \u201ccrucial questions impose themselves on our conscience and can no longer be avoided.\u201d (Pope Leo XIV, 6)<\/a> And then he poses three:<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhere are we going?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cToward what goal do we wish to orient ourselves?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhat direction should we choose as a people and as a human community?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Notice what Pope Leo XIV is doing. He is not beginning with condemnation. He is not leading with a policy proposal or a regulatory framework. He is beginning\u2014as a pastor\u2014with the questions we cannot responsibly avoid.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n These questions were so important as an organizing theme in the encyclical that he reiterated them in his address to CAPP<\/a> during a private audience only 5 days after the encyclical’s release.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n So let us examine how the encyclical answers each one.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n If we continue on our current trajectory without deliberate moral intervention, the document suggests we are drifting toward what the Pope calls the \u201cBabel syndrome\u201d: a world shaped by the idolatry of profit, the flattening of human difference into data, and the illusion that a single digital language can capture everything \u2014 including the mystery of the human person.<\/span><\/p>\n The warning is sharpened in (Magnifica Humanitas, 5)<\/a>, where he identifies a structural problem few other voices have named so plainly: the main drivers of technological development are private entities whose resources and capacity to act now surpass those of many governments.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cTechnological power takes on an unprecedented, predominantly \u2018private\u2019 aspect, which makes it even more challenging to discern, govern and direct such power toward the common good.\u201d (Pope Leo XIV, 5)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n This is not an abstract concern. When power escapes democratic accountability \u2014 when there is no mechanism for the common good<\/a>\u00a0to assert itself over the logic of profit \u2014 the vulnerable lose. They always do.<\/span><\/p>\n Rerum Novarum<\/em> said the same thing about unregulated industrial capitalism in 1891. Magnifica Humanitas<\/em> says it about unregulated AI and digital power in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cMore power does not necessarily imply something better\u2026 if technological development advances without a corresponding ethical and social progress, the result may be an increase in means without a growth in humanity: \u2018having more\u2019 without \u2018being more.\u2019\u201d (Pope Leo XIV, 94)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n The encyclical also identifies a deeper ideological drift: a growing tendency\u2014which it names directly as a pathology<\/strong>\u2014to evaluate human beings by their productivity<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n In (Magnifica Humanitas, 51)<\/a>, the Pope warns against \u201cthe ideology that suggests that every person must earn or justify his or her own worth, to the point of attributing greater value to those who are more efficient or effective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n This is the culture we are headed for\u2014if we do not choose differently. And at the furthest horizon of this drift, the document places transhumanism and posthumanism\u2014philosophies that treat human limits not as part of our dignity but as engineering problems to be solved<\/strong>. The Pope does not dismiss these currents; he takes them seriously enough to name them as the ideological destination of an uncorrected course. (Magnifica Humanitas, 115, 116, 252)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n In short: where are we going?<\/strong> Toward a world where the mystery of the person is reduced to data, where power concentrates in private hands beyond democratic reach, and where human beings are measured by what they produce \u2014 unless we make a different choice. The goal is not complicated, but it is demanding. It is integral human development: the authentic flourishing of every person in every aspect of life \u2014 spiritual, material, cultural, moral, relational \u2014 with no one left behind, and no part of the person reduced to a means.<\/span><\/p>\n Pope Leo XIV is direct about this in (Magnifica Humanitas, 14)<\/a>. The standards of discernment are the principles Catholics have been given: \u201cthe dignity of the human person<\/a>, the universal destination of goods<\/a>, the preferential option for the poor<\/a>, care for our common home<\/a>, and peace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n These are not new. They are the accumulated wisdom of 135 years of the Church\u2019s engagement with the modern world. But they must now be applied \u2014 concretely \u2014 to AI governance, data systems, platforms, and algorithms.<\/span><\/p>\n And this living tradition continues: St. John Paul II\u2019s Laborem Exercens<\/a>\u00a0(1981) affirmed the priority of labor over capital and work as participation in God\u2019s creation, while Pope Francis in Fratelli Tutti<\/a> (2020) warns against economies that exclude the vulnerable, including gig workers on the periphery.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cDevelopment is truly human when it places people at the center instead of the accumulation of wealth.\u201d (Magnifica Humanitas, 83)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The encyclical deepens the goal as it moves forward.<\/span><\/p>\n Integral human development is not merely a political or economic goal \u2014 it has a theological horizon.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Pope Leo XIV invokes the image of the New Jerusalem, the \u201ccivilization of love\u201d that both Pope St. John XXIII and Pope St. John Paul II held out as the ultimate direction of Christian social action.<\/span><\/p>\n The goal we orient ourselves toward is, in the end, not a technocratic utopia but a human community in which every person is received as a gift, not evaluated as a resource.<\/span><\/p>\n This is why the encyclical treats human dignity<\/a> not as one value among others to be weighed in a cost-benefit analysis, but as the starting point and criterion of all legitimate development.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Any technology \u2014 any system, platform, or algorithm \u2014 that diminishes human dignity is not progress. It is regression, regardless of what the efficiency metrics say.<\/span><\/p>\n Pope Leo XIV reaches back to the Book of Nehemiah. After the exile, Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to find the walls in ruins and the community in despair. He did not rebuild the city alone. He assigned \u201ceach person their own section of the wall\u201d and called the whole people to the work together.<\/span><\/p>\n The encyclical holds this image up as the model for what the Church \u2014 and indeed all people of good will \u2014 are called to do in the face of the AI revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAll are given their own section of the wall: scientists and researchers, entrepreneurs and workers, educators and legislators, civil society, popular movements and faith communities\u2026 We should not be intimidated by tensions or differences because they can become creative forces when guided by shared responsibility.\u201d (Magnifica Humanitas, 13)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The direction, in other words, is not withdrawal, resignation, or the passive hope that technology will regulate itself. Nor is it the opposite error: a panicked rejection of AI as inherently dehumanizing.<\/span><\/p>\n The direction is engaged, collaborative, morally grounded stewardship.<\/span><\/p>\n The encyclical is concrete about what this looks like. In paragraph 14, Pope Leo XIV calls for \u201cresponsible planning, the assessment of human and social impact, the inclusion of the most vulnerable, the promotion of digital literacy and guiding research and industry toward justice and peace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n These are not vague aspirations. They are practical criteria \u2014 derived from CST \u2014 that can and must be applied to technology governance. But the encyclical also insists the choice is ultimately a choice between two cultures, two ways of being human together.<\/span><\/p>\n In Magnifica Humanitas, 16<\/a>, Pope Leo XIV puts it in its most compressed form:<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe task that stands before us is that of being builders of communion, rather than architects of Babel. We are to be servants of the coming Kingdom, instead of lords of towers destined for ruin.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Builders of communion. That is the direction.<\/span><\/p>\n Not the domination of nature, of other people, or of the future by those with the most processing power \u2014 but the patient, humble, collaborative work of building a world in which every person finds a place.<\/span><\/p>\n But beginning with the three questions\u2014and tracing how the encyclical answers them\u2014gives us something solid to stand on as the wider conversation begins.<\/span><\/p>\n Pope Leo XIV has asked good questions. He has also answered them \u2014 not in a tidy list but woven through the whole of a rich and serious document.<\/span><\/p>\n The encyclical is structured so that the answers deepen as you read, which is itself a statement about how discernment works.<\/span><\/p>\n The next step is ours.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Magnifica Humanitas was released on May 15, 2026, the 135th anniversary of Rerum
