They gathered in churches, supported imprisoned activists’ families, and created parallel institutions of mutual aid. Catholics today find ourselves divided on nearly every social issue\u2014immigration, economics, climate, healthcare, life issues. We debate policies, cite different Church documents, and sometimes wonder if we\u2019re even reading the same teaching<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
But beneath every debate lies one non-negotiable foundation: the love of Jesus Christ<\/strong>. Miss this, and we miss everything.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Catholic Social Teaching begins and ends with love\u2014specifically, the love revealed in Jesus Christ. This love is not abstract or optional; it is the very heart of Christian discipleship and the foundation for all social action.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The love of Jesus is at the heart of Catholic Social Teaching.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n This love is not mere sentiment or almsgiving; Jesus makes it the new commandment: Christians are to \u201clove one another as I have loved you.\u201d (John 13:35) This is the mark by which the world knows we are His disciples.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The Church teaches that the practice of Catholic Social Teaching (CST) is the \u201cinstitutional path \u2014 we might also call it the political path \u2014 of charity,\u201d making it \u201cno less excellent and effective than the kind of charity which encounters the neighbor directly.\u201d (Pope Benedict XVI, 7)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n This foundation has been clear for decades. As Pope Pius XII stated, \u201cThe social program of the Catholic Church is based upon three powerful pillars: truth, justice and Christian charity.\u201d (Message to German Catholics, September 4, 1949)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The Christian’s love for Jesus can be expressed through:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Consider how this works in practice. When Catholics advocate for living wages, they’re not merely promoting an economic policy\u2014they’re institutionalizing Christ’s love for the dignity of workers and work itself.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n When Catholics engage immigration policy, they must seek to honor both the rule of law and the corporal work of mercy\u2014’welcome the stranger’\u2014recognizing that Christ’s love must shape how we structure our common life.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Solidarity demands the \u201cwillingness to ‘lose ourselves’ for the sake of others.\u201d (Pope Francis, 4)<\/a> <\/span>It is a \u201cfirm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good\u201d and is fundamental to the Christian view of social and political life.
