What is Gender Equality?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
Gender equality is synonymous with the inherent equality of the sexes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nIt should not be confused with gender as being on a \u2018spectrum\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nThis \u2018gender spectrum\u2019 thinking is what Pope Francis refers to as “Gender ideology…one of the most dangerous ideological colonization\u2019s<\/strong>. It goes beyond the sexual” and \u201cdilutes differences, and the richness of men and women\u201d. Gender equality must not mean ‘sameness’, only apply to male and female, and be rooted in the dignity given by God.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There are two sexes, and sacred scripture reveals the beauty and equality of man and woman.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nSex and gender are complementary and aligned by God\u2019s design (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2333)<\/a><\/span> not by self-determination.<\/span><\/p>\nEquality is not \u201cachieved by an abstract proclamation that \u2018all men and women are equal\u2019. The Church views gender equality in terms of eradicating abuses to human dignity, particularly abuses to women.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n“[E]quality between men and women is still not universally found, and there are…instances, where women are second-class citizens or less. We have to keep fighting”. Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. This means a correct understanding of the human person and of each person\u2019s unique value. All Catholic social teaching flows from this: the inherent dignity of every person that comes from being made in God\u2019s image.\u00a0<\/p>\n
