In a landmark “Note”<\/strong> jointly issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Dicastery for Culture and Education, the Holy See has made a profound contribution to the increasingly urgent global debate on Artificial Intelligence (AI).<\/span><\/p>\nThis document is a gift\u2014one that draws deeply from the Church\u2019s anthropological and ethical traditions while seamlessly integrating philosophical and theological insights. It offers not only a holistic response to AI but also a clear-eyed assessment of its practical challenges, from warfare and privacy to education, labor, healthcare, and misinformation. More importantly, it calls each of us to reflect on how AI shapes our relationships\u2014with one another and with God.<\/span><\/p>\nThe Core Argument: Intelligence vs. Computation<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
A key insight<\/strong>, previously advanced by Pope Francis, is that the term \u201cArtificial Intelligence\u201d can be misleading. - Humanity\u2019s Relationship with Truth<\/strong> \u2013 Human intelligence is ultimately \u201cGod\u2019s gift fashioned for the assimilation of truth.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
- Stewardship of Creation<\/strong> \u2013 We live out our identity as imago Dei by \u201ckeeping\u201d and \u201ctilling\u201d (Gen. 2:15) creation, using our intelligence responsibly in accordance with God\u2019s plan.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
These principles culminate in an integral understanding of human intelligence as more than the mere acquisition of facts<\/strong>. Unlike AI, which processes information mechanically, human intelligence possesses an openness to deeper meaning:<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cHuman intelligence retains the ability to access the totality of being, contemplating existence in its fullness, which goes beyond what is measurable, and grasping the meaning of what has been understood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\nThis warning is stark: if AI is elevated beyond its role as a product of human intelligence, we risk creating an idol.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\nThe Ultimate Concern: AI and Humanity\u2019s Relationship with God<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Note does not advocate for rejecting AI, but rather guiding its development with wisdom, ethics, and a commitment to human dignity<\/strong>. Some critics argue the emphasis on the potential harms of AI may overshadow its benefits, potentially hindering technological progress and feel its extensive focus on ethical considerations might overshadow the potential benefits of AI, such as advancements in healthcare and education. Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it.
