Together, these actions reflect his administration\u2019s broader focus on reducing unauthorized immigration while prioritizing national security and enforcement.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nDid Catholics Vote for Mass Deportations?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
<\/span><\/span>For voting American Catholics\u201458% of whom cast their ballot for Mr. Trump\u2014this raises an important question: how should an American Catholic respond to mass deportations?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nThe answer: it depends on the scope.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nThe Church is clear about the rights and dignity of migrants and refugees and<\/strong> the necessity of governments to enforce the laws of their nations in service to the Common Good.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nHow Catholic Social Teaching Guides Us<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Church recognizes the rights of nations to govern and protect themselves in the interests of the Common Good.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cCertainly every state has the right to regulate migration and to enact policies dictated by the general requirements of the common good,\u201d wrote Pope Benedict XVI<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nCategories for deportation of specific groups can be reasonably asserted as a matter of safety. [While higher estimates are often quoted, given the complexities involved in accurately counting an unauthorized population, estimates can vary, and figures should be interpreted with caution, considering the methodologies and potential biases of the sources.]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nMost immigrants have come to the United States to escape economic depression, civil unrest, gang violence, human trafficking, the drug trade, and to seek a better life.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nMany of these people work, participate in their communities, and build families. In fact, as of March 31, 2023, there were approximately 578,680 active recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in the United States (USCIS)<\/a>. These are often referred to as the \u201cDreamers\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nSo, what about these people?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nTo remove 12 million people, many\/most of whom are contributing and adding to the community would be difficult to support as, \u201cThe more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner<\/strong> in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin.\u201d (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2241)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nFurthermore, as Pope Benedict XVI reminds us, \u201cEvery migrant is a human person who, as such, possesses fundamental, inalienable rights that must be respected by everyone and in every circumstance.\u201d (Caritas in Veritate, 62)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nWhile the state can exercise its removal authority, removal policies should ensure \u201csafeguarding respect for the dignity of each human person.\u201d (Pope Benedict XVI)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nA mass deportation program would not be aligned to Church teaching.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nThe Bottom Line<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
<\/span><\/span>So, where does that leave us?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nAs with all social issues, policy should be based on the principles of Human Dignity, Solidarity and Subsidiarity. These measures have included tightening asylum procedures, expanding restrictions on refugee admissions, and directing additional resources toward border enforcement and deportation.<\/p>\n
Together, these actions reflect his administration\u2019s broader focus on reducing unauthorized immigration while prioritizing national security and enforcement.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The answer: it depends on the scope.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The Church is clear about the rights and dignity of migrants and refugees and<\/strong> the necessity of governments to enforce the laws of their nations in service to the Common Good.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cCertainly every state has the right to regulate migration and to enact policies dictated by the general requirements of the common good,\u201d wrote Pope Benedict XVI<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Categories for deportation of specific groups can be reasonably asserted as a matter of safety. Those caught in the drug trade, human traffickers, or others engaging in violent criminal activities pose a clear threat to the community in which they reside.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Such an approach to deportation is well-supported by Church teaching<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The same applies to immigration laws, i.e., who is allowed entry.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Pope St. John Paul II affirmed as much when he wrote \u201cCertainly, the exercise of such a right [to emigrate] is to be regulated, because practicing it indiscriminately may do harm and be detrimental to the common good of the community that receives the migrant.\u201d (World Migration Day 2001, 3)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The Church even places an obligation on the immigrant population. Once settled, they \u201care obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens.\u201d (CCC, 2241)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The Church<\/strong> recognizes the<\/strong> state\u2019s duty<\/strong> to the Common Good and the dignity of each person, and immigrants\u2019 duty<\/strong> to the receiving community.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The state has a duty to defend itself and immigrants who are seeking to better themselves have a right to do so.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Also, estimating the exact number of unauthorized immigrants in the United States is challenging due to the nature of this population.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n However, the <\/span><\/span>(Department of Homeland Security, September 2024)<\/a> estimates the number at 11.9 million. [While higher estimates are often quoted, given the complexities involved in accurately counting an unauthorized population, estimates can vary, and figures should be interpreted with caution, considering the methodologies and potential biases of the sources.]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Most immigrants have come to the United States to escape economic depression, civil unrest, gang violence, human trafficking, the drug trade, and to seek a better life.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Many of these people work, participate in their communities, and build families. In fact, as of March 31, 2023, there were approximately 578,680 active recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in the United States (USCIS)<\/a>. These are often referred to as the \u201cDreamers\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n So, what about these people?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n To remove 12 million people, many\/most of whom are contributing and adding to the community would be difficult to support as, \u201cThe more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner<\/strong> in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin.\u201d (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2241)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Furthermore, as Pope Benedict XVI reminds us, \u201cEvery migrant is a human person who, as such, possesses fundamental, inalienable rights that must be respected by everyone and in every circumstance.\u201d (Caritas in Veritate, 62)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n While the state can exercise its removal authority, removal policies should ensure \u201csafeguarding respect for the dignity of each human person.\u201d (Pope Benedict XVI)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n A mass deportation program would not be aligned to Church teaching.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n As with all social issues, policy should be based on the principles of Human Dignity, Solidarity and Subsidiarity.
