Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. However, the two terms differ based on the role of medical professionals:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n We will use the term “euthanasia” to encompass both euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n “Euthanasia or mercy killing … is a grave moral evil”. (Pope Benedict XVI)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n However, “Even if it is motivated by sentiments of a misconstrued compassion or of a misunderstood preservation of dignity, euthanasia actually eliminates the person instead of relieving the individual of suffering.” (Pope St. John Paul II, 3)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n Arguments that euthanasia should be legally allowed fail to understand \u201c[f]undamental rights are neither created by the lawmaker nor granted to the citizen<\/strong>. The value of human dignity\u2026takes precedence over all political decision-making\u201d.\u00a0(Pope Benedict XVI)<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n What these “pro” arguments <\/strong>do is advance a “the throwaway culture”<\/strong> (Pope Francis)<\/a> and “[the] spread of this mentality turns…into a culture of death.” (Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Of course, the Church knows and understands that “death, often preceded or accompanied by severe and prolonged suffering, is something which naturally causes people anguish.” (Declaration on Euthanasia, III)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n But she advises us \u201cnot to fall into the deceptive trap of thinking that life can be disposed of, to the point of \u2018legitimizing its interruption with euthanasia, even if it is masked by a veil of human compassion\u201d.
