<\/span>Culture is<\/strong> the shared<\/strong> values, beliefs, customs, behaviors, and practices of a group of people.<\/span><\/p>\nIt encompasses a wide range of aspects, including language, religion, traditions, art, food, music, social norms, what is right and wrong, and even ways of perceiving the world.<\/span><\/p>\nCulture is passed down<\/strong> from generation to generation and shapes how individuals in a society think, communicate, and interact with each other.<\/span><\/p>\nThe Preeminence of Culture<\/span><\/h2>\n
<\/span>Culture<\/a> is the most important structure<\/strong> of society<\/strong> because \u201cMan is understood in a more complete way when he is situated within the sphere of culture through his language, history, and the position he takes towards the fundamental events of life, such as birth, love, work and death.” (Pope St. John Paul II, 24)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\nPope St. John Paul II established the need to maintain vibrant and critical interaction among economics<\/a>, culture, and\u00a0politics<\/a>, emphasizing that of these \u2013 culture is the most important: \u201cAll human activity takes place within a culture and interacts with culture.\u201d (Pope St. John Paul II, 51)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\u201c[P]olitics and economy cannot be reduced to mere technical know-how bereft of ideals and unconcerned with the transcendent dimension of man\u2026\u201d (Pope Francis, 10)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\nOur Culture is in Crisis!<\/span><\/h2>\n
Contemporary culture is in crisis<\/strong> because of a drift from faith, the erosion of traditional moral values, and a growing disregard for human dignity. <\/span><\/p>\nOur problems have their roots in culture and are manifested in economic, political, and societal pathologies such as consumerism<\/a>, our human and physical environment\u00a0(ecology)<\/a>, alienation<\/a>, and radical secularism\/relativism.
<\/span><\/p>\nIn fact, these represent a spiritual and moral crisis that affects the core of human existence. They originate \u201cin the denial of the primacy of the human person! Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. It encompasses a wide range of aspects, including language, religion, traditions, art, food, music, social norms, what is right and wrong, and even ways of perceiving the world.<\/span><\/p>\n Culture is passed down<\/strong> from generation to generation and shapes how individuals in a society think, communicate, and interact with each other.<\/span><\/p>\n Pope St. John Paul II established the need to maintain vibrant and critical interaction among economics<\/a>, culture, and\u00a0politics<\/a>, emphasizing that of these \u2013 culture is the most important: \u201cAll human activity takes place within a culture and interacts with culture.\u201d (Pope St. John Paul II, 51)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n \u201c[P]olitics and economy cannot be reduced to mere technical know-how bereft of ideals and unconcerned with the transcendent dimension of man\u2026\u201d (Pope Francis, 10)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Our problems have their roots in culture and are manifested in economic, political, and societal pathologies such as consumerism<\/a>, our human and physical environment\u00a0(ecology)<\/a>, alienation<\/a>, and radical secularism\/relativism.
