Because “man expresses and fulfils himself<\/strong>\u00a0by working<\/strong>“.\u00a0(Pope St. John Paul II, 6)<\/a> The “door” to our dignity “is work”. <\/span>“Work-life balance” refers to the equilibrium between the time and energy we devote to professional responsibilities (work) and our personal life (family, leisure, health, hobbies, etc.). <\/span><\/p>\nAchieving a good work-life balance means effectively managing both areas without allowing one to dominate or negatively impact the other. <\/span><\/p>\nA healthy work-life balance helps prevent burnout, reduces stress, and promotes overall well-being. It involves setting boundaries, managing time efficiently, and ensuring that work commitments don’t overwhelm personal needs and vice versa.<\/span><\/p>\n One way Catholic social teaching approaches work-life balance is through the lens of workers’ rights. Pope Leo XIII listed these rights in the first modern social encyclical, Rerum Novarum<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n\n- the right to a limitation of working hours.<\/span><\/li>\n
- the right to form private and professional associations.<\/span><\/li>\n

Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. A strong work ethic is often associated with qualities like discipline, integrity, and a sense of accountability. Someone with a good work ethic takes pride in their work, consistently delivers quality results, and remains motivated even when facing challenges. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201c[T]he Bible shows that work is one of the original conditions of the human being.\u201d\u00a0(Pope Benedict XVI)<\/a> and a strong work ethic, in many ways, is directed by God since <\/span>\u201cWe were created with a vocation to work.\u201d (Pope Francis, 128)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Why? Because “man expresses and fulfils himself<\/strong>\u00a0by working<\/strong>“.\u00a0(Pope St. John Paul II, 6)<\/a> The “door” to our dignity “is work”. (Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n And the nature of that work is not the basis for evaluating its value! \u201c[T]he basis for determining the value of human work is not primarily the kind of work being done but the fact that the one who is doing it is a person.\u201d (Pope St. John Paul II, 6)\u200b<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cLabor\u2026is not a mere commodity<\/strong>. On the contrary, the worker\u2019s\u00a0human dignity\u00a0in it must be\u00a0recognized.\u201d\u00a0(Pope Pius XI, 83)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Achieving a good work-life balance means effectively managing both areas without allowing one to dominate or negatively impact the other. <\/span><\/p>\n A healthy work-life balance helps prevent burnout, reduces stress, and promotes overall well-being. It involves setting boundaries, managing time efficiently, and ensuring that work commitments don’t overwhelm personal needs and vice versa.<\/span><\/p>\n One way Catholic social teaching approaches work-life balance is through the lens of workers’ rights. Pope Leo XIII listed these rights in the first modern social encyclical, Rerum Novarum<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n Respect for these rights promotes a work-life balance that respects the dignity of the human person and the dignity of work.<\/span><\/p>\n Learn what makes work “decent”<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIn the work of man, the Christian finds a small part of the cross of Christ<\/strong>\u00a0and accepts it in the spirit of redemption with which Christ accepted his cross for us.\u201d\u00a0(Pope St. John Paul II, 27)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Through work, man becomes a \u201ccooperator with God in the work of creation<\/strong>\u201d!
