What does the Bible say about homosexuality? Nothing good.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Homosexuality in the Old Testament<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n
Homosexual behavior is addressed in Genesis<\/strong> and Leviticus<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nIn Genesis we find that \u201cGod created man in his own image<\/strong>\u2026 male and female created he them. And God blessed them, saying: Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it.\u201d (Genesis 1:27-28)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nHomosexual behavior is a sin<\/strong> against human nature as demonstrated when the men of Sodom are rebuked (Genesis 19:1-11). While seeking to abuse two angels of God, they called to Lot: \u201cWhere are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them. Lot went outside to meet them\u2026and said, \u201cNo, my friends.\u00a0Don\u2019t do this <\/strong>wicked thing<\/strong>.\u201d (Genesis 19:24-25).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nLeviticus leaves no doubt of the moral judgement made against homosexual relations: \u201cDo not have sexual relations with a man<\/strong> as one does with a woman; that is detestable.\u201d (Leviticus 18:22)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nLeviticus goes further, calling for a heavy<\/strong> price<\/strong> for homosexual behavior: \u201cIf a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. <\/span><\/span>They are to be<\/strong>\u00a0put to death<\/strong>; their blood will be on their own heads.\u201d <\/span><\/span>(Leviticus 20:13)<\/span><\/p>\nHomosexuality in the New Testament<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n
Saint Paul is quite clear on homosexual behavior, warning the Corinthians: \u201cDo not be deceived<\/strong>: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor\u00a0homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.\u201d 1 Cor 6:9-10<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nHere, the Old Testament penalty of death established in Leviticus is replaced with an even greater penalty: they will not \u201cinherit the kingdom of God\u201d<\/strong>. Can there be a bigger price than losing eternal repose?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nPaul, in writing to the Romans, builds on the laws of Judaism<\/strong> (Leviticus 18:22; 20:13), placing these in the context of the conflict between Christianity and pagan society. He explained how, having \u201cexchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made\u201d (Genesis 1-22) \u201cGod gave them over to shameful passions: their wives replaced natural intercourse with unnatural ones, and so also men\u2026became enflamed with lust for one another<\/strong>, and men committed\u00a0shameful acts with men and received the deserved reward of their deviation.\u201d (Romans 1:26-27).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nIn his letter to Timothy, Paul names those who engage<\/strong> in homosexual<\/strong> acts<\/strong> as sinners<\/strong>: \u201c[T]he law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for\u2026the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality\u2026and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God\u201d. Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. The others flow from it.
