Social Justice Issues Today<\/span><\/h2>\n
Much of our social and civil turbulence centers around issues of social justice<\/em>. But what is social justice?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nSocial justice is what results when \u201cassociations or individuals\u2026obtain what is their due,<\/strong> according to their nature and their vocation.\u201d (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1928)<\/a> It is intimately linked to the common good and the right exercise of authority. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\nThis understanding of social justice was made clear by Pope Francis when he observed: “the duty of social justice\u2026requires the realignment of relationships between stronger and weaker peoples in terms of greater fairness” (World Day of Peace, 2014, 4)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\nSocial justice impacts on the social structures around us; it \u201cupholds the fundamental human right to a dignified life<\/strong>\u201d. Helping the poor and fighting poverty, “demands before all else an appreciation of the immense dignity of the poor”. Another social justice issue is healthcare. In recent years, demands for \u201cuniversal\u201d or \u201cnationalized healthcare\u201d have grown.

On the contrary, it is an essential condition for social peace. Universal health coverage is…primarily a moral imperative”. (Pope Leo XIV)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\nWhile how to best provide healthcare is complicated, the issues must be addressed because “The true measure of humanity is essentially determined in relationship to suffering and to the sufferer. Abortion is a fundamental social justice issue.<\/span><\/p>\nWhat is well known is that the Church condemns it. “Abortion is murder<\/strong>\u2026It\u2019s a human life, period.” (Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\nWhat is less well known are the many Church programs offering help to woman – with wonderful results: \u201c[W]here concrete support is offered, despite problems and influences which are sometimes critical, women\u00a0are able to make the sense of love, life and motherhood triumph within them.\u201d\u00a0(Pope St. John Paul II, 2)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\nAnd even less known is the abundant mercy God extends through His Church to those who\u2019ve had an abortion or been involved in one:<\/span><\/p>\n“The wound in your heart\u00a0may not yet have healed.\u00a0Certainly, what happened was and remains terribly wrong. But\u00a0do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope<\/strong>. The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. This means a correct understanding of the human person and of each person\u2019s unique value. All Catholic social teaching flows from this: the inherent dignity of every person that comes from being made in God\u2019s image.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Much of our social and civil turbulence centers around issues of social justice<\/em>. But what is social justice?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
Social justice is what results when \u201cassociations or individuals\u2026obtain what is their due,<\/strong> according to their nature and their vocation.\u201d (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1928)<\/a> It is intimately linked to the common good and the right exercise of authority. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n This understanding of social justice was made clear by Pope Francis when he observed: “the duty of social justice\u2026requires the realignment of relationships between stronger and weaker peoples in terms of greater fairness” (World Day of Peace, 2014, 4)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n Social justice impacts on the social structures around us; it \u201cupholds the fundamental human right to a dignified life<\/strong>\u201d. (Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Social justice \u2018issues\u2019 include housing, racial justice, education opportunity, poverty, healthcare, fair voting, abortion, marriage, family rights, appropriate welfare, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n Catholic social teaching informs all of these and is the best place to start if we want to strive for true social justice.<\/span><\/p>\n Learn more about the Human Rights the State must Protect<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe Church reproves, as foreign to the mind of Christ, any discrimination.\u201d (Pope St. Paul VI, 5)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhoever exalts race\u2026distorts and perverts an order of the world planned and created by God\u201d. (Pope Pius XI, 8)<\/a> Learn more about Catholic Social Teaching and Racism<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n And the Church recognizes poverty “extends not only to material poverty but also to the many forms of cultural and religious poverty.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2444)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n All forms<\/strong> of poverty require and deserve a “preferential option”. “Considerations of\u00a0justice and equity\u00a0can at times\u00a0demand that those in power pay more attention to the weaker members of society, since these are at a disadvantage when it comes to defending their own rights and asserting their legitimate interests.” (Pope St. John XXIII, 56)<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Learn more about the Preferential Option for the Poor<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n And healthcare<\/strong>, is \u201ca universal right<\/strong>\u00a0which means that access to healthcare services\u00a0cannot be a privilege.\u201d\u00a0(Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n “Health cannot be a luxury for the few. On the contrary, it is an essential condition for social peace. Universal health coverage is…primarily a moral imperative”. (Pope Leo XIV)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n While how to best provide healthcare is complicated, the issues must be addressed because “The true measure of humanity is essentially determined in relationship to suffering and to the sufferer. This holds true both for the individual and for society.” (Pope Benedict XVI, 38)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Learn more about Universal Healthcare<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n What is well known is that the Church condemns it. “Abortion is murder<\/strong>\u2026It\u2019s a human life, period.” (Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n What is less well known are the many Church programs offering help to woman – with wonderful results: \u201c[W]here concrete support is offered, despite problems and influences which are sometimes critical, women\u00a0are able to make the sense of love, life and motherhood triumph within them.\u201d\u00a0(Pope St. John Paul II, 2)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n And even less known is the abundant mercy God extends through His Church to those who\u2019ve had an abortion or been involved in one:<\/span><\/p>\n “The wound in your heart\u00a0may not yet have healed.\u00a0Certainly, what happened was and remains terribly wrong. But\u00a0do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope<\/strong>. The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
