People often put words in Pope Francis\u2019 mouth regarding LGBT issues but what did the Holy Father actually say?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nFirst, Pope Francis was a pastor.<\/strong> “I always distinguish between what pastoral care is for people who have a different sexual orientation and what gender ideology is. They are two different things.”\u00a0(Pope Francis)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\nWith this pastoral approach he taught that “‘The Church must accompany with attention and care the weakest of her children, who show signs of a wounded and troubled love, by restoring in them hope and confidence'”. Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. People often put words in Pope Francis\u2019 mouth regarding LGBT issues but what did the Holy Father actually say?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
First, Pope Francis was a pastor.<\/strong> “I always distinguish between what pastoral care is for people who have a different sexual orientation and what gender ideology is. They are two different things.”\u00a0(Pope Francis)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n With this pastoral approach he taught that “‘The Church must accompany with attention and care the weakest of her children, who show signs of a wounded and troubled love, by restoring in them hope and confidence'”. (Pope Francis, 291)<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n What has Pope Francis, in his own words, said about gender ideology?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Medical and pastoral support needs to help people<\/strong> “to<\/strong> accept their own bodies<\/strong>\u00a0and to\u00a0avoid\u00a0the\u00a0pretension ‘to cancel out sexual difference because one no longer knows how to deal with it.'” (Pope Francis, 285)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n \u201c[Gender ideology] dillutes differences, and the richness of men and women\u201d (Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n \u201c[T]oday the ugliest danger is gender ideology, which cancels out differences\u201d. (Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Gender identity theory \u201cdenies\u00a0the\u00a0difference and reciprocity\u00a0in [the] nature of a man and a woman and envisages a\u00a0society with-out sexual differences\u201d with the consequence that “human identity\u00a0becomes the\u00a0choice\u00a0of the individual, one which\u00a0can\u00a0also\u00a0change over time”.\u00a0(Pope Francis, 56)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n \u201c[E]rasing difference is erasing humanity<\/strong>. Man and woman\u2026are in a fruitful \u2018tension\u2019”. (Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Pope Francis warned us that “Once the human being declares independence from reality and behaves with absolute dominion, the very foundations of our life begin to crumble<\/strong>“. (Laudato Si, 117)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n Humanity grows “through the tension of differences. The question of gender is diluting the differences and creating an equal world, all blunt, all the same. And that goes against the human vocation.” (Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n This is not novel.
