To answer whether Jesus was a socialist we need to first define socialism.<\/span><\/p>\nClassic Socialism<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
Classic socialism, usually associated with Karl Marx, is the transitional economic system between capitalism and communism. At the height of extreme Capitalism caused injustices of the Industrial Revolution, Pope Leo XIII made the Church\u2019s response to Marx\u2019s theories for a \u2018better\u2019 economy abundantly clear:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nSocialism <\/strong>is \u201cemphatically unjust\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0for it \u201cwould rob the lawful possessor, distort the functions of the State, and create utter confusion in the community.\u201d\u00a0(Rerum Novarum, 4)<\/a><\/em> <\/span><\/p>\nSocialism \u201cmust be utterly rejected<\/strong>, since it only injures those whom it would seem meant to benefit, is directly contrary to the natural rights of mankind, and would introduce confusion and disorder into the commonweal.\u201d\u00a0(Rerum Novarum, 24)<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\nOne hundred years later, Pope St. John Paul II, all too familiar with socialist and communist regimes, stated that under socialism, freedom \u201cis replaced by a burdensome system of bureaucratic control which dries up the wellsprings of initiative and creativity\u201d. (Centesimus Annus, 25)<\/em><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\nBasically, socialism will never work because \u201cIt is not possible to understand man on the basis of economics alone\u201d. What about a Christian socialism? Was Jesus a social democrat? A Christian socialist? Surely, that approach takes in the \u2018best of both worlds\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nDemocratic socialism, a more fluid concept, essentially advocates for:<\/span><\/p>\n\n- Government provision of a range of basic services<\/strong>, such as health care and higher education – for free or at a significant discount, and\/or;<\/span><\/li>\n
- Government control of vast sectors of the economy<\/strong> \u2013 to ameliorate perceived \u201cills\u201d (climate change, income inequality, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
And, the Church says many positive things about the ends of this more \u201cmoderate socialism\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\nPope Pius XI said moderate socialism \u201cinclines toward and in a certain measure approaches the truths which Christian tradition has always held sacred; for it cannot be denied that its demands at times come very near those that Christian reformers of society justly insist upon.\u201d (Quadragesimo Anno, 113)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\nHe went further, \u201cIt can come even to the point that imperceptibly these ideas of the more moderate socialism will no longer differ from the desires and demands of those who are striving to remold human society on the basis of Christian principles<\/strong>.\u201d (Quadragesimo Anno, 114)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\nSo, perhaps you can be a Catholic and<\/em> a \u201cmoderate\u201d socialist at the same time. A kind of Catholic socialism<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\nNo – Democratic Socialism is Opposed to the Gospel<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
\u201cSocialism\u2026wholly ignoring and indifferent to [the] sublime end of both man and society, affirms\u00a0that human association has been instituted for the sake of\u00a0material advantage alone.\u201d (Pope Pius XI, 118)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nIndeed, the \u201cmeans\u201d of even \u201cmoderate socialism\u201d \u201ccannot be reconciled<\/strong> with the teachings of the Catholic <\/strong>Church because its concept of society itself is\u00a0utterly foreign\u00a0to Christian truth\u201d.\u00a0(Pope Pius XI, 117)<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\nEven moderate socialism \u201cis based\u2026on a theory of human society\u2026\u00a0irreconcilable\u00a0with true Christianity.\u201d\u00a0(Pope Pius XI, 120)<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\nPope Pius XI \u201cmade it clear that\u00a0no Catholic could subscribe\u00a0even to moderate Socialism\u201d.\u00a0(Pope St. John XXIII, 34)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\nSocialism, even moderate forms like democratic socialism<\/strong>, essentially<\/strong>\u00a0reduces mankind\u00a0into economic elements<\/strong>. Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. The Catholic Church Condemns Socialism<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
At the height of extreme Capitalism caused injustices of the Industrial Revolution, Pope Leo XIII made the Church\u2019s response to Marx\u2019s theories for a \u2018better\u2019 economy abundantly clear:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nSocialism <\/strong>is \u201cemphatically unjust\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0for it \u201cwould rob the lawful possessor, distort the functions of the State, and create utter confusion in the community.\u201d\u00a0(Rerum Novarum, 4)<\/a><\/em> <\/span><\/p>\nSocialism \u201cmust be utterly rejected<\/strong>, since it only injures those whom it would seem meant to benefit, is directly contrary to the natural rights of mankind, and would introduce confusion and disorder into the commonweal.\u201d\u00a0(Rerum Novarum, 24)<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\nOne hundred years later, Pope St. John Paul II, all too familiar with socialist and communist regimes, stated that under socialism, freedom \u201cis replaced by a burdensome system of bureaucratic control which dries up the wellsprings of initiative and creativity\u201d. (Centesimus Annus, 25)<\/em><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\nBasically, socialism will never work because \u201cIt is not possible to understand man on the basis of economics alone\u201d. What about a Christian socialism? Was Jesus a social democrat? A Christian socialist? Surely, that approach takes in the \u2018best of both worlds\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nDemocratic socialism, a more fluid concept, essentially advocates for:<\/span><\/p>\n\n- Government provision of a range of basic services<\/strong>, such as health care and higher education – for free or at a significant discount, and\/or;<\/span><\/li>\n
- Government control of vast sectors of the economy<\/strong> \u2013 to ameliorate perceived \u201cills\u201d (climate change, income inequality, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
And, the Church says many positive things about the ends of this more \u201cmoderate socialism\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\nPope Pius XI said moderate socialism \u201cinclines toward and in a certain measure approaches the truths which Christian tradition has always held sacred; for it cannot be denied that its demands at times come very near those that Christian reformers of society justly insist upon.\u201d (Quadragesimo Anno, 113)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\nHe went further, \u201cIt can come even to the point that imperceptibly these ideas of the more moderate socialism will no longer differ from the desires and demands of those who are striving to remold human society on the basis of Christian principles<\/strong>.\u201d (Quadragesimo Anno, 114)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\nSo, perhaps you can be a Catholic and<\/em> a \u201cmoderate\u201d socialist at the same time. A kind of Catholic socialism<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\nNo – Democratic Socialism is Opposed to the Gospel<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n
\u201cSocialism\u2026wholly ignoring and indifferent to [the] sublime end of both man and society, affirms\u00a0that human association has been instituted for the sake of\u00a0material advantage alone.\u201d (Pope Pius XI, 118)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nIndeed, the \u201cmeans\u201d of even \u201cmoderate socialism\u201d \u201ccannot be reconciled<\/strong> with the teachings of the Catholic <\/strong>Church because its concept of society itself is\u00a0utterly foreign\u00a0to Christian truth\u201d.\u00a0(Pope Pius XI, 117)<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\nEven moderate socialism \u201cis based\u2026on a theory of human society\u2026\u00a0irreconcilable\u00a0with true Christianity.\u201d\u00a0(Pope Pius XI, 120)<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\nPope Pius XI \u201cmade it clear that\u00a0no Catholic could subscribe\u00a0even to moderate Socialism\u201d.\u00a0(Pope St. John XXIII, 34)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\nSocialism, even moderate forms like democratic socialism<\/strong>, essentially<\/strong>\u00a0reduces mankind\u00a0into economic elements<\/strong>. At the height of extreme Capitalism caused injustices of the Industrial Revolution, Pope Leo XIII made the Church\u2019s response to Marx\u2019s theories for a \u2018better\u2019 economy abundantly clear:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
Socialism <\/strong>is \u201cemphatically unjust\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0for it \u201cwould rob the lawful possessor, distort the functions of the State, and create utter confusion in the community.\u201d\u00a0(Rerum Novarum, 4)<\/a><\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n Socialism \u201cmust be utterly rejected<\/strong>, since it only injures those whom it would seem meant to benefit, is directly contrary to the natural rights of mankind, and would introduce confusion and disorder into the commonweal.\u201d\u00a0(Rerum Novarum, 24)<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n One hundred years later, Pope St. John Paul II, all too familiar with socialist and communist regimes, stated that under socialism, freedom \u201cis replaced by a burdensome system of bureaucratic control which dries up the wellsprings of initiative and creativity\u201d. (Centesimus Annus, 25)<\/em><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n Basically, socialism will never work because \u201cIt is not possible to understand man on the basis of economics alone\u201d. (Centesimus Annus, 24)<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Read more about the Church’s consistent opposition to Socialism here<\/a><\/p>\n Even moderate socialism \u201cis based\u2026on a theory of human society\u2026 irreconcilable\u00a0with true Christianity.\u201d\u00a0(Pope Pius XI, 120)<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Democratic socialism, a more fluid concept, essentially advocates for:<\/span><\/p>\n And, the Church says many positive things about the ends of this more \u201cmoderate socialism\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n Pope Pius XI said moderate socialism \u201cinclines toward and in a certain measure approaches the truths which Christian tradition has always held sacred; for it cannot be denied that its demands at times come very near those that Christian reformers of society justly insist upon.\u201d (Quadragesimo Anno, 113)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n He went further, \u201cIt can come even to the point that imperceptibly these ideas of the more moderate socialism will no longer differ from the desires and demands of those who are striving to remold human society on the basis of Christian principles<\/strong>.\u201d (Quadragesimo Anno, 114)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n So, perhaps you can be a Catholic and<\/em> a \u201cmoderate\u201d socialist at the same time. A kind of Catholic socialism<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n Indeed, the \u201cmeans\u201d of even \u201cmoderate socialism\u201d \u201ccannot be reconciled<\/strong> with the teachings of the Catholic <\/strong>Church because its concept of society itself is\u00a0utterly foreign\u00a0to Christian truth\u201d.\u00a0(Pope Pius XI, 117)<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Even moderate socialism \u201cis based\u2026on a theory of human society\u2026\u00a0irreconcilable\u00a0with true Christianity.\u201d\u00a0(Pope Pius XI, 120)<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Pope Pius XI \u201cmade it clear that\u00a0no Catholic could subscribe\u00a0even to moderate Socialism\u201d.\u00a0(Pope St. John XXIII, 34)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Socialism, even moderate forms like democratic socialism<\/strong>, essentially<\/strong>\u00a0reduces mankind\u00a0into economic elements<\/strong>.
