Vatican II approach: \u201cTo see (to study the facts); To judge (to apply moral, theological, and spiritual perspective); And to act (to take those tangible steps to resolve the issue at hand).\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nNew (Pope Francis\u2019) approach:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n- \u201cTo contemplate (to engage the situation or issue affectively as well as intellectually).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- To discern, (to allow the complexity and even contradictions of the reality to come into focus).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- To propose (to foment solutions by inviting others to ponder and contribute to the desired outcomes).\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\u201cPope Francis\u2019 methodology is important because it allows us to engage the current situation in its fuller complexity.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nTo Contemplate<\/span><\/h2>\n
\u201cContemplation requires that we immerse ourselves in the world, engaging with our hearts the world\u2019s suffering and hopes as well as its empirical data.\u201d Why? To rethink \u201cthe outdated criteria which continue to rule the world.\u201d\u00a0(Pope Francis, 2)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nTHE ISSUES<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n1. \u201cThe global economy is in the midst of an epochal change\u2026The Fourth Industrial Revolution\u2026propelled by technology, including ever more pervasive Artificial Intelligence.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n2. \u201cFinancialization\u2026with a turn away from ethics to more predatory business practices that prioritize profits over prosperity\u201d leading to \u201cever-more aggressive self-interest\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n3. \u201cThe relentless pressure to commodify work \u2014 and to reduce all human endeavor to a bottom-line calculation\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nHowever, proposals for a \u201cmore inclusive capitalism\u201d and ESG are not the solution since \u201cno mention is ever made of the required moral conversion, with its urgent ethical dimensions\u201d This results in a \u201cmarginalization of ethics, and privatization of morality\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nWHAT CAPP IS CALLED TO DO<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n\u201cRethink and influence the\u2026new economy with precepts from Catholic Social Teaching.\u201d Ensuring \u201cthat the Fourth Industrial paradigm will be revolutionary for its humanizing aims and moral outcomes.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\u201cPope Francis\u2019 methodology is important because it allows us to engage the current situation in its fuller complexity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\nTo Discern<\/span><\/h2>\n
Discernment requires us \u201cto allow the complexity and even contradictions of the reality to come into focus\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nTHE ISSUES<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n\u201cWhy have we not begun the deep change our economy and world need\u201d? \u201cWhy the recurring resistance to obviously needed change?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cPope Francis perceives that our many crises share a common cause\u2026\u2018the hyper-inflation of the individual\u2019\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cAs we know from monetary policy, inflation is a synonym for devaluation. Individualism taken to this inflationary extreme, not only excludes social responsibilities, but also isolates, damages, and even destroys the person.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nPope Francis calls this \u201cradical individualism\u201d which \u201cmakes us believe that everything consists in giving free reign to our own ambitions\u201d and to \u201can \u2018individualized conscience\u2019\u201d where \u201cmorality no longer exists as an objective ideal or social imperative.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nWhen \u201cEverything becomes merely personal preference \u201cit fuels both hatred and self-loathing\u2026 rather than the common good of every human person.\u201d Benedict XVI also united Solidarity and Subsidiarity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nWHAT CAPP IS CALLED TO DO<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n\u201cAt a moment when the economy and its leaders and participants need moral guidance\u201d how do we provide it?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cCatholic Social Teaching is the antidote for this virus; the medicine we need for the malady of profit without conscience. Dignity, solidarity, subsidiarity, care for family and God\u2019s creation, the common good, and the preferential option for the poor are moral truths that we embrace as
Catholics\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nThe Fondazione must work to make Catholic Social Teaching \u201crelevant to those fashioning the new economy\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nAnd this is important! \u201cScholars, anthropologists, and philosophers who have studied societies in crisis affirm two lessons: – Those that successfully rebuild\u2026foster shared values and dreams; – Meanwhile, those that fail or disintegrate do so because they exclude social justice considerations and concentrate on recreating the previous status-quo.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nTo Propose<\/span><\/h2>\n
\u201cThe outcome from discernment is\u2026to propose and invite dialogue. So, what specific proposals can we make to the world of business from Catholic Social Teaching?\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n- Focus on family, work and community. \u201cThese [are] the fundamental aspects of [human] dignity.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- Dare to dream! \u201cAs Pope Francis showed in his apostolic exhortation Querida Amazonia\u2026Dreaming is constitutive of dignity: without dreams we are indeed robots and slaves.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- Have \u201cthe courage to change not only [your] mind, but also [your] beliefs\u2026This ability to change radically echoes one of the teachings from Spe Salvi, \u201cScience does not redeem man\u2026man is redeemed by love.\u201d So, we must dare to confront current dogmas.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- \u201cWe especially need\u2026a preferential option for the most vulnerable\u2026True solidarity embraces those most vulnerable at the far periphery of politics and the economy.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- \u201cProtect the rights of workers\u201d and those who \u201chave been thrown away, rendered discarded and disposable as if merely another consumer item.\u201d \u201cPope Francis has challenged [this] \u2018dictatorship of an impersonal economy\u2019\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- Practice \u201cpersonal subsidiarity\u201d. I.e., \u201cSupport God\u2019s plan rather than control it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
- Remember the \u201cpower of prayer, particularly as contemplation and listening\u2026As much as Catholic Social Teaching inspires us to act, its spiritual essence and motivation must flow from prayer.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\n“Individualism taken to this inflationary extreme, not only excludes social responsibilities, but also isolates, damages, and even destroys the person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n“SO, IN CONCLUSION, WHAT DO WE PROPOSE?”<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n1. To \u201chelp us tackle the structural equalities\u2026we need a new ethics of the common good [forged in solidarity] as the basis for policy making\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cIn Centesimus Annus, St. Pope John Paul II reminded us that our Catholic tradition calls for \u2018a society of free work, of enterprise, and of participation. Such a society is not directed against the market but demands that the market be appropriately controlled by the forces of society and by the State, so as to guarantee that the basic needs of the whole of society are satisfied.\u201d (#35)\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n2. \u201cWe need to restore the dignity of dreaming to unleash the spirit of human ingenuity and creativity\u2026recalling the social teaching in Centesimus Annus, \u2018the human being is the primary route that the church must travel to fulfill its mission.\u2019 (53)\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nThe economy must meet \u201cthe fundamental criteria for human hopes as well as for business productivity.\u201d \u201c[W]e must insist that the common good economy furnish possibilities as well as profits\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n3. \u201cWe need to\u2026forge authentic policies and transformative practices for sustainable development…which means undoing what is unsustainable \u2014 breaking the patterns that protect privilege and power\u201d. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cUndoing what is unsustainable means undoing: Inequality; unlimited consumption; exploitation of workers; human trafficking; and profits without ethics.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n4. We must assume and play our role! \u201cIn the end, each of us has a role to play. Each of us have been given unique talents and special gifts with which to contribute to an economy that enriches integrally, the body, mind, soul of the person, and the sense of freedom, participation, accountability and resilience in the community.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nWHAT CAPP IS CALLED TO DO<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n\u201cTo be the \u2018sign of the cross\u2019 in our world. That is to say:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\na. preserve and cherish God\u2019s creation.<\/span>
b. work to extend the dignity of the Incarnation to our most vulnerable sisters and brothers.<\/span>
c. through prayer and contemplation, cooperate with the Holy Spirit to help fashion an economy of conscience and compassion.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nAnd to \u201cOffer the talents Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. This means a correct understanding of the human person and of each person\u2019s unique value. All Catholic social teaching flows from this: the inherent dignity of every person that comes from being made in God\u2019s image.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Individualism taken to this inflationary extreme, not only excludes social responsibilities, but also isolates, damages, and even destroys the person.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Pope Francis calls this \u201cradical individualism\u201d which \u201cmakes us believe that everything consists in giving free reign to our own ambitions\u201d and to \u201can \u2018individualized conscience\u2019\u201d where \u201cmorality no longer exists as an objective ideal or social imperative.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n When \u201cEverything becomes merely personal preference \u201cit fuels both hatred and self-loathing\u2026 rather than the common good of every human person.\u201d Benedict XVI also united Solidarity and Subsidiarity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAt a moment when the economy and its leaders and participants need moral guidance\u201d how do we provide it?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cCatholic Social Teaching is the antidote for this virus; the medicine we need for the malady of profit without conscience. We must assume and play our role! \u201cIn the end, each of us has a role to play.
