font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">It is tempting to read Catholic Social Teaching through the lens of American politics.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Conservatives can find much that sounds familiar: the importance of the family, private property, religious freedom, personal responsibility, economic initiative and the principle of subsidiarity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Liberals can point just as readily to the Church\u2019s concern for workers, migrants and the poor, its insistence on solidarity, and its repeated criticism of economic systems that leave people behind.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">This sometimes produces an odd result. Catholics on both sides of the political divide can become convinced that Catholic Social Teaching essentially agrees with them\u2014and that its principal purpose is to correct the people on the other side.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">That raises a larger question about Catholic Social Teaching and politics: <strong>are its principles liberal, conservative\u2014or something entirely different?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">The answer is important.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Catholic Social Teaching is neither liberal nor conservative. It is not a Catholic version of either ideology, nor is it an effort to split the difference between the two.<strong><br \/><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">It begins somewhere else.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">Before Politics Comes the Human Person<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span>The Church begins with the human person, created in the image and likeness of God and possessing a dignity that precedes the state, the market and every political party.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pope St. John Paul II put the point plainly in <em>Centesimus Annus<\/em>: the guiding principle of the Church\u2019s social doctrine is <strong>\u201ca correct view of the human person and of his unique value.\u201d<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/centesimus-annus\/#11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Centesimus Annus, 11)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The principles of Catholic Social Teaching flow from that understanding of the person. They begin with <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/catholic-social-teaching-principles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">human dignity, solidarity, and subsidiarity<\/a><\/span>, all ordered toward the <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/the-common-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">common good<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These principles are not independent ideas. Human dignity, solidarity and subsidiarity work together in pursuit of the common good in Catholic Social Teaching.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pope Leo XIV makes the same ordering explicit: <strong>\u201cprogress is measured by the dignity of each person.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/magnifica-humanitas\/#12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Magnifica Humanitas, 12)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later in the encyclical he returns to the same conviction: \u201cIt is individuals that matter, each and every person, together with their families.\u201d Social movements, ideologies and grand political proclamations, he says, are \u201cworthless unless they lead to the flourishing of persons.\u201d <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/magnifica-humanitas\/#58\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Magnifica Humanitas, 58)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">These are principles, not political positions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">That distinction matters because political ideologies tend to emphasize some truths while neglecting others. Catholic Social Teaching does not permit us that luxury.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Pope Benedict XVI offered an important warning when he wrote that Christian charitable activity <strong>\u201cmust be independent of parties and ideologies.\u201d <\/strong><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/deus-caritas-est\/#31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Deus Caritas Est, 31)<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">And, as Pope Francis said: \u201cpolitics is one of the highest forms of charity because it seeks the common good\u201d. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/speeches\/2013\/june\/documents\/papa-francesco_20130607_scuole-gesuiti.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Address to Students)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">The same caution applies when we bring the Church\u2019s social doctrine into public life.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Catholic teaching cannot simply become religious language attached to a political platform.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">Catholic Social Teaching, Private Property and the Political Right<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span>Consider economic life.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Catholic view of private property and capitalism does not begin with hostility toward markets. <strong>Catholic teaching strongly defends private property and recognizes the importance of free economic initiative<\/strong>. It does not regard business, entrepreneurship or profit as inherently suspect. Work and the creation of wealth can contribute greatly to human flourishing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But none of these is absolute.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Property has a social purpose. Markets exist for people, not people for markets. Workers cannot be treated simply as units of production, and economic efficiency cannot justify ignoring the poor or vulnerable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pope Leo XIV states the point without hedging: <strong>the right to private property &#8220;is always subordinate to the universal destination of goods.&#8221;<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/magnifica-humanitas\/#66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Magnifica Humanitas, 66)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where Catholic Social Teaching can become uncomfortable for the political right.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><\/span>Solidarity is not simply generosity toward those who are struggling. Pope St. John Paul II rejected the idea that it is merely a feeling of compassion. In <em>Sollicitudo Rei Socialis<\/em>, he called solidarity a \u201cfirm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good.\u201d <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/sollicitudo-rei-socialis\/#38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Sollicitudo Rei Socialis, 38)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pope Leo XIV expresses the same truth succinctly: <strong>\u201cno one is saved alone.\u201d<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/magnifica-humanitas\/#73\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Magnifica Humanitas, 73)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is a demanding definition. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It means that the condition of our neighbor is not irrelevant to us. Poverty, exclusion and economic hardship cannot simply be dismissed as someone else\u2019s responsibility.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A society committed to human dignity must ask not only whether an economy produces wealth, but whether economic life allows people to participate, to work with dignity, to support families and to share appropriately in the goods of society.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">Solidarity, Subsidiarity and the Political Left<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Yet the Church\u2019s insistence on solidarity and concern for the poor does not mean that every social problem should be handed upward to the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Here Catholic Social Teaching can become equally uncomfortable for the political left.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">The principle of <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"\/subsidiarity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subsidiarity<\/a> insists that people and the institutions closest to them should retain the responsibilities they are capable of exercising. It also requires higher political bodies to assist and empower lower ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Pope Pius XI described the principle in unusually strong terms in <em>Quadragesimo Anno<\/em>, calling it \u201c<strong>an injustice and at the same time a grave evil\u201d to assign to higher bodies what smaller communities can accomplish themselves. <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/quadragesimo-anno\/#79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Quadragesimo Anno, 79)<\/a><\/span><\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Subsidiarity is sometimes reduced to the slogan \u201csmaller government,\u201d but that misses its deeper meaning. Its purpose is to protect the human person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Families, businesses, churches, voluntary associations, local communities and other institutions are not merely administrative conveniences between the individual and the state. They are places where people exercise freedom, assume responsibility, form relationships and participate directly in society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">Higher levels of authority have necessary responsibilities. When politics \u201cabandons a long-term perspective and reduces itself to short-term calculations or sterile<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> polarizations,\u201d he warns, \u201cthe language of the common good loses credibility.\u201d <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/magnifica-humanitas\/#63\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Magnifica Humanitas, 63)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">Catholics Can Disagree About Politics<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span>There will, of course, continue to be legitimate disagreements among Catholics about public policy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Catholics can agree that society has an obligation to assist the poor and disagree about the most effective way to do it. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They can recognize the dignity of migrants while disagreeing about particular immigration policies. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They can agree that workers deserve protection while reaching different conclusions about the proper roles of employers, unions and government.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such disagreement does not necessarily represent a rejection of Catholic Social Teaching.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prudence is necessary in deciding how the principles of Catholic Social Teaching should be applied to particular circumstances.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is why neither Catholicism and liberalism nor Catholicism and conservatism can simply be treated as interchangeable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">No modern political ideology fully captures the Church\u2019s vision of the human person and society.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What matters is where we begin. Are we beginning with our political ideology and asking the Church to validate it? <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or are we beginning with the Church\u2019s understanding of the human person and allowing it to form our political judgment?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #054368;\">The Harder Conversion<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span>There is a subtler danger in allowing politics to become our starting point.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A conservative Catholic can become very skilled at identifying the parts of Catholic Social Teaching that challenge liberals.
