\nTo discuss the universal destination of goods<\/a><\/span>\u00a0we need to pick up where we left off in discussing the right to private property<\/a><\/span>: YES \u2013 there is a right to private property…AND – human nature can lead to the distortion of that right when it is defined in isolation or with a certain exclusivity.<\/span><\/p>\nWe must always recall that the right to private property is subject to modifications which may be imposed by the requirements of the common good<\/span><\/a> and solidarity<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\nThe Universal Destination of Goods is Prior to Private Property<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
\nThis dualism is long-standing and key to comprehending Catholic social teaching, which “has always understood the right to private property within the broader context of the right common to all…\u200bthe right to private property is subordinated to the right to common use, \u200bto the fact that goods are meant for everyone”. (Pope St. John Paul II, 14)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nIndeed, \u201cThe universal destination of goods is not a figure of speech found in the Church\u2019s social teaching. It is a reality prior to private property.\u201d (Pope Francis, 3.1)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nWhy? Because, \u201c[t]he goods of the earth are destined for the whole human race\u201d. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2402)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/span>Therefore, \u201c[f]or the sake of the common good, it requires respect for the \u200buniversal destination of goods\u200b”. The Universal Destination of Goods is a major theme of Catholic social teaching<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
<\/span> We must always recall that the right to private property is subject to modifications which may be imposed by the requirements of the common good<\/span><\/a> and solidarity<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n Indeed, \u201cThe universal destination of goods is not a figure of speech found in the Church\u2019s social teaching. It is a reality prior to private property.\u201d (Pope Francis, 3.1)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Why? Because, \u201c[t]he goods of the earth are destined for the whole human race\u201d. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2402)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/span>Therefore, \u201c[f]or the sake of the common good, it requires respect for the \u200buniversal destination of goods\u200b”. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2401)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n And<\/strong>, it requires \u201crespect for the right to private property\u201d (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2401)<\/a> <\/span><\/span>as well.<\/span><\/p>\n Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it.
