left;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The environment is not an optional concern added to Catholic social teaching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Pope St. John Paul II warned in Centesimus Annus that \u201cin his desire to have and to enjoy rather than to be and to grow, man consumes the resources of the earth and his own life in an excessive and disordered way,\u201d and that humanity must become conscious of its \u201c<strong>duties and obligations towards future generations.<\/strong>\u201d <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/centesimus-annus\/#37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Centesimus Annus, 37)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Pope Benedict XVI likewise described the earth as a <strong>\u201cprecious gift of the Creator\u201d<\/strong> whose intrinsic order gives humanity guidance for its role as steward. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/benedict-xvi\/en\/audiences\/2009\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_aud_20090826.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(General Audience, August 26, 2009)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">And Pope Francis placed the care of creation squarely within Catholic social teaching in <\/span><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/laudato-si\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Laudato Si)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_section_8 et_pb_section et_section_regular et_flex_section\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_row_10 et_pb_row et_flex_row\">\n<div style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #054368;\">Pope Leo XIV has explicitly continued his predecessors\u2019 teaching on care for creation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #054368;\">In his 2025 message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, he referred directly to \u201cclimate changes provoked by human activity\u201d and warned that environmental destruction does not affect everyone equally. The poor, marginalized and excluded are often hurt first and most severely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #054368;\">Pope Leo XIV went further: \u201cEnvironmental justice\u2026can no longer be regarded as an abstract concept or a distant goal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #054368;\">For believers, he taught, care for creation is a \u201cduty born of faith.\u201d <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/messages\/creation\/documents\/20250630-messaggio-giornata-curacreato.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, 2025)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #054368;\">This is fully consistent with the teaching of St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. The natural environment is not more important than the human person. Nor is the human person somehow separate from creation. Care for creation, human dignity, solidarity, peace, development and concern for the poor belong together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #054368;\">Climate change is one among many serious ecological and environmental challenges. A minority of credentialed scientists also gives greater weight to natural variability or questions estimates of human influence. But it would be misleading to suggest that scientists are evenly divided over the principal human contribution to recent warming.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #054368;\"><strong>More importantly, scientific agreement about the cause of warming does not dictate a single political response.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #054368;\">Science can help establish causes, risks and probabilities. regulation, energy development and international climate commitments.<\/span><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The history of the Paris Agreement illustrates this divide.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The United States accepted the Agreement in 2016, withdrew effective November 4, 2020, rejoined in 2021 and again withdrew effective January 27, 2026. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/treaties.un.org\/Pages\/ViewDetails.aspx?chapter=27&amp;clang=_en&amp;mtdsg_no=XXVII-7-d&amp;src=TREATY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(United Nations Treaty Collection, Paris target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(International Energy Agency, Accelerating Clean Cooking and Electricity Services Scenario)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Reliable modern energy is indispensable to health care, education, sanitation, economic opportunity and human development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The International Energy Agency notes that households, clinics, schools and businesses without reliable modern energy suffer lower productivity and impaired socioeconomic development. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-energy-and-climate-model\/accelerating-clean-cooking-and-electricity-services-scenario-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(International Energy Agency)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Consequently, a Catholic response cannot consider emissions in isolation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Policies must also ask whether poor families and developing nations have access to energy that is: <strong>Reliable. Affordable. Abundant enough to support development. Communities are already exposed to climatic risks, making adaptation and resilience essential elements of climate justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The United Nations Environment Program estimates that <strong>developing countries will require approximately $310\u2013365 billion annually for climate adaptation by 2035<\/strong> while international public adaptation finance was about $26 billion in 2023\u2014meaning estimated needs are roughly 12 to 14 times current flows. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/adaptation-gap-report-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(UNEP, Adaptation Gap Report 2025)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Adaptation can include spending on flood defenses, drought-resistant agriculture, stronger water systems, coastal protection, heat preparedness, disaster-warning systems, and public-health measures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">For Catholics, the relevant question therefore cannot simply be: How do we reduce emissions?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">It must also be: How do we protect people\u2014especially the poor\u2014from harms that cannot now be entirely avoided?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_35 et_pb_column et_pb_column_1_3 et-last-child et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_image_14 et_pb_image et_pb_module et_block_module\"><span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Wind-turbines-scattered-across-fields-gather-energy-to-be-turned-into-electricity.jpg\" alt=\"Renewal energy is helping to address climate change.\" title=\"Wind turbines scattered across fields gather energy to be turned into electricity\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_33 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Energy System Is Already Changing<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_34 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p>The world\u2019s energy system is changing rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, <strong>renewable sources supplied approximately 34% of global electricity, compared with 23% only a decade earlier<\/strong>. Wind and solar together supplied approximately 17%, up from around 5% ten years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Coal nevertheless remained the largest individual source of global electricity, also at approximately 34%. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-energy-review-2026\/electricity-supply\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(International Energy Agency, Global Energy Review 2026 \u2014 Electricity Supply)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Renewable capacity additions reached approximately 800 gigawatts in 2025<\/strong>, the 23rd consecutive annual record, with solar accounting for more than three-quarters of those additions. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-energy-review-2026\/technology-solar-pv-and-wind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(IEA, Global Energy Review 2026 \u2014 Solar PV and Wind)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yet global energy-related CO\u2082 emissions also increased about 0.4% in 2025, <strong>reaching a record of nearly 38.4 billion tonnes<\/strong>. <a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-energy-review-2026\/co2-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(IEA, Global Energy Review 2026 \u2014 CO\u2082 Emissions)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Both facts matter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Low-carbon technologies are scaling rapidly \u2014 But global demand for energy continues to grow and emissions have not yet fallen on a sustained global basis.<\/p>\n<p>The prudential question is therefore no longer whether cleaner technologies can contribute meaningfully.
