Solidarity is Radical<\/h4>\n

At the Last Supper Jesus said: “A new commandment I give to you,\u200b \u200bthat you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:34) This is a much more radical charge because, how does God love us? \u200bUnremittingly\u200b.\u00a0It is no longer \u200blove our neighbor as our self\u200b but love our neighbor as God loves us\u200b.<\/strong> \u201cWhat is needed is the willingness to \u201close ourselves\u201d for the sake of others”.\u00a0(Pope Francis, 4)<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

“Truth and justice must stand above my comfort and physical\u00a0well being\u00a0or else my life itself becomes a lie.” (Pope Benedict XVI, 38)<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Are we living a lie?<\/p>\n

Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles –\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. Good governments and good economic systems find ways of fostering the three principles.<\/p>\n

This means a correct understanding of the human person and of each person\u2019s unique value. All Catholic social teaching flows from this: the inherent dignity of every person that comes from being made in God\u2019s image.\u00a0<\/p>\n

(Pope St. John Paul II, 38)<\/a> Love of God and love of neighbor are, in fact, linked and form one, single commandment.<\/p>\n

So, too, it is an injustice and at the same time a grave evil and a disturbance of right order to transfer to the larger and higher collectivity functions which can be performed and provided for by the lesser and subordinate bodies\u201d.
